Indian Mynas are aggressively territorial pest birds that pose a serious threat for native birds and other small animals. The birds, which are also called “Common Mynas”, have been rated by the World Conservation Union as one of the world’s 100 most invasive species. Their impact on native species is so severe that they have previously beat the cane toad and feral cat to win Wild Watch’s “Pest of Australia” award!
Southwest Mornington Peninsula Landcare Group are encouraging landholders to help control mynas. The group provides information on building your own trap, how to conduct a successful trapping program and state-approved techniques for humanely euthanizing birds.
Main Ridge and Mornington Mens Sheds have myna traps available to the public for a donation. Participants in the program are asked to commit to an animal welfare protocol to ensure they use humane methods of control.
