Ruth has used historical, social and ecological data to better understand temporal dynamics in fisheries and benthic communities over the last 200 years, with a view to informing contemporary management and conservation goals.

Over the past few years she has worked on historical changes in UK and Australian coastal marine ecosystems, using a variety of data sources and quantitative techniques including archival materials (government and popular media sources), isotopic dating analysis, taxonomic identification, oral history interviews and underwater survey techniques.
