The Southern Dandenongs Landcare Group was formed in August 2007 with the aim to protect and preserve the remnant vegetation of the southern section of the Dandenong Ranges, particularly in water catchments which are home to our locally threatened platypus populations. We house the headwaters of two of greater Melbourne's catchments, Monbulk and Muddy Creeks. Monbulk Creek is part of the Dandenong Creek catchment which empties into Port Philip Bay and Muddy Creek is part of the Cardinia Creek catchment of Westertnport Bay. The Dandenong Creek catchment is the traditional land of the Wurundjeri people. Cardinia Creek catchement is the traditional land of the Bunerong or Boon-wurrung people. Both groups belong to the five clans which make up the Kulin Nation of the greater Melbourne area.
Our mission is to engage and educate local residents in how to care for their increasingly threatened local bushland on private and public land and the very special creatures dependent on this bushland. We aim to enrich local community life and preserve our natural heritage for posterity.
