Sheehan’s Crossing Streamside Reserve (alternately known as Buckley’s Crossing Crown Allotment 50a) is located on the edge of the Volcanic Plain bioregion in the Upper Maribyrnong catchment between the townships of Romsey and Lancefield. This cleared crown land is six hectares in size and slopes down into the Deep Creek and is surrounded by undulating grazed pasture. The two EVC (Environmental Vegetation Classification) benchmarks that relate to the site are the Stream Bank Shrublands and the Plains Grassy woodlands classifications (2006).
Features of the site include surviving remnant riparian vegetation, indigenous grassland areas and snow gums. A native fish survey held in the area discovered the presence of the Native pigmy perch. It is a common occurrence during drought for the Deep Creek to stop flowing during Summer, which contributes to the importance of the pools for native fish and aquatic animals such as the platypus. Recently high rainfalls are responsible for healthy water flow and an increase in bird and fish numbers.
This project aims to:
• restore biodiversity at the site.
• Contribute to the site’s environmental assets.
• Protect the integrity of remnant vegetation.
• Protect the intrinsic value of the wildlife corridor.
• To establish a vegetative buffer along the Deep Creek to protect water quality.
• To identify weed species and develop a weed control program.
• To revegetate and reinstate indigenous vegetation along the waterway and encourage natural regeneration.
