Revegetating a section of the railway track between Castlemaine and Maldon

In 2004 the Muckleford Catchment Landcare Group contacted Dean Bridgefoot, Landcare Coordinator for the Shire of Mount Alexander, to coordinate a meeting with the Victorian Goldfields Railway (VGR). The VGR planned to remove trees along sections of track between Castlemaine and Maldon as part of a safety upgrade. Permit requirements imposed involved offsetting the removal of trees by large scale plantings of native understory and ground cover species.
In October 2005 the Muckleford Catchment Landcare Group, in collaboration with the Victorian  Goldfields Railway and the Shire of Mount Alexander, completed the establishment of a Fauna/Flora corridor along a six hectare section of track situated immediately east of the Muckleford/Walmer Road. An $8,000 NCCMA Second Generation Community Group Grant (2004) was used to fund this project.
