Over 25 members of the Longlea and District Landcare group gathered at the Axedale Tavern on Tuesday 14 April 2015 to farewell long-term members Tom Henty and Robyn Ballinger. Over the past 17 years, the Longlea couple have been strong supporters of the group, lending their knowledge, passion, time and hard work to the group's pursuits, such as tree planting, weed and pest animal control. Tom was the group's President for over three years, and could regularly be seen manning the Landcare stand at the Axedale Market and chatting with interested community members.
The Landcare group usually meet at the Longlea Cricket Clubrooms bi-monthly from February to December on the first Monday of the month at 7.30pm, however the rooms are currently being extended and refurbished. Although we enjoyed each other's company so much at the farewell dinner we cancelled the formal meeting, there are no complaints to continue to hold meetings at the Tavern in the short term!
A fun and cheerful evening was enjoyed, celebrating the achievements of the group and also welcoming new members. It's always great to welcome new residents to the area, particularly those willing to get involved in our vibrant community groups and improve their local environment. This injection of new ideas and interest from landholders with properties large and small will be fostered by our friendly and supportive group, who are keen to share our collective skills in plant and animal identification, weed control, revegetation and waterway management. Now is a great time to explore new ideas for onground works with the opening of the Victorian Landcare grants in May/June.
