Local land use & environmental issues
The Stanley district has a high proportion of crown land to private land. Extensive mining in the past has resulted in significant disturbance to the plateau's native vegetation with major levels of weed infestation.
Current levels of weed infestation can only be managed by integrated weed control actions by all land managers. Lack of consistent weed control programs in the past has led to extensive infestation in many areas of forest. The Stanley Landcare Group are committed to addressing this imbalance. Priority weeds are Blackberry, Gorse, St John's Wort and Broom.
Stanley is a major centre for horticulture, in particular apples and chestnuts. Sheep and cattle grazing is also present. Hancock's Pinus radiata plantations are also a major land use in the area. Many residents around Stanley have small holdings that are not used for commercial agricultural production.
The Stanley area is also a prescribed water catchment for the greater Beechworth area.
