The Mitta Mitta is the most popular whitewater river in Australia, with school groups doing multi-day journeys, commercial rafting, and private paddlers enjoying the class 3 rapids from August through early December. The riparian habitat along the river has been invaded by English Broome and willow since the '03 fires, choking out many natives.
Some upstream spots along the river are accessible for weed elimination, but not the famous "gorge" run. Friends of the Mitta hopes to start gathering volunteers and funds to begin the long process. We're also working with Parks Victoria to formalise some local walking tracks.
