The Yelta Landcare Group formed in 1995 to increase awareness of local landcare issues and to have a positive influence on them. The group is concerned with degradation of the river, rural and roadside environments and invasive pest plants. The Yelta Landcare Group has now established and implemented a Local Group Action plan that has lead to the successful completion of a number of community environmental projects and programs the most recent being ridding the Merbein Common of African Boxthorn and Prickly Pear. They are currently working towards further replanting part of the Merbein Common with indigenous species.
