This project is live

Ever been baffled by locals directions of “go down Pound Gully, along Luke’s Flat and past Hurst’s Sheds”. These colloquial place names relate to the history of the area, whether it be past landholders, physical attributes or land uses. This project, part funded by the Public Record Office of Victoria's - Local History Grants, aims to collate this information using local knowledge and create a map and appendix plotting the sites and explaining how they got their name.

With the ageing population and the influx of new landholders from Melbourne suburbs, the knowledge and use of these ‘local place names’ is being lost, hence the need to record this information.  The members of our local landcare group are a fabulous resource, representing some of the older local landholders in the region and hence hold a lot of this information.
It is hoped that the project will act as a catalyst for conversations about the local history of the area and be recording the information we can share it with the younger and newer landholder in the area.
