Local Landcare Group, Gecko CLaN is one of 88 finalists in the National Landcare Awards and Member for Benalla, Bill Sykes this week cast his vote in the People’s Choice Award in support of their nomination www.landcareonline.com.au/nationalawards.
Dr Sykes said, "Twelve representatives from Victoria are amongst the finalists competing in the 2012 National Landcare Awards, including the Gecko CLaN who work in the Goulburn Broken region."
The Gecko CLaN work as an umbrella organisation operating within the areas of the 20 Landcare groups of the Goulburn Broken Catchment.
Dr Sykes said, "The group are in the running for the Innovation in Sustainable Farm Practices Award for their work experimenting with a new pasture cropping technique that promises to provide more flexibility against climate variability.
"Briefly the technique offers greater resilience than conventional cropping or grazing programs as it allows flexibility for the farmer to decide on either a grain or grazing outcome late in the season. It also allows for a pasture-cropped paddock to retain its pasture after harvest."
Dr Sykes said locals can join in with their support by going online and voting for Victorian finalists in the 2012 National Landcare Awards in the People’s Choice Award.
He said people living in north east Victorian can be proud that the Gecko CLaN are one of 12 Victorian finalists.
