The Woorndoo district supports very high-quality remnants of nationally significant temperate natural grasslands. Wonderful examples of these seasonally-spectacular plant communities are retained along local public roads and in reserves such as Woorndoo Common and the Woorndoo Cemetery.
In 2013, WLPG with the support of community volunteers and Moyne Shire. restored 1.25 ha of species rich native grassland on a road reserve at the corner of Woorndoo-Streatham Rd. and Bolac Plains Rd., just across Salt Creek from Woorndoo (see map). The success of this restoration was the basis for a DELWP grant in 2017 to restore a further 1.25 ha of diverse native grassland and to undertake a number of experiments (see image - the 2013 Woorndoo native grassland restoration in spring). The experiments were conducted over two years and four seasons (autumn 2018; spring 2018; autumn 2019; spring 2019). Their objective was to refine protocols for increasing species diversity within established grassland.
The 1.25 ha sowing was completed in October 2019 and is establishing well with a good cover of native grass, mainly Wallaby Grass (various Rytiosperma species). There has also been good emergence of various local forb species - mainly daisies at this early stage.
