Merri River Warrnambool Moyne Shire Making A Difference (MAD) for the Merri was established after a forum in 2007 to discuss the health and issues in the catchment.  The Merri was seen as being low priority and faced many challenges from urban and rural sources. 
From the beginning there has been strong agency , local government and community support. Many of the people who attended  these early meetings continue on today.  Achievements include raising the profile of the Merri leading and many on ground works across the catchment to improve the waterway vegetation, limit stock access and ultimately improve the river's health.
