A variety of funding sources has contributed to a major restoration of the Glenelg Council's Picnic Hill Reserve through extensive weed removal and planting. A designated area is also protected with feral fencing. The Reserve is an important historic site with a cairn and lookout where the furthest south Major Mitchell travelled on his exploration in 1836. The area has significant flora and fauna now preserved. Friends of Cape Nelson act as Committee of management for the Reserve.
