In September 2013 part of the Sungold Fieldays Carpark was set aside to showcase direct seeding methods for native shelterbelts.
Rather than take people away from their duties to see it happen, we made a film about the seeding. This film shows how a site is ploughed, seeded, and rolled - and is narrated by Direct Seed - Bill O'Shea.
Direct Seed along with Leigh Clark on the tractor, donated their time to make this belt possible. Joe Clark Fencing cut us a hot deal on the stock exclusion fencing; Tony Rea- Chair of Sungold Fieldays Commitee organised permission and site choice; Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory donated the land and promoted the site through the Sungold Fieldays Website and Acme Rural helped out with some of the materials.
A small amount of funding for the works came from the Victorian Landcare Grants as approved by the Glenelg Hopkins CMA. Basalt to Bay Landcare Network did the organising and leg-work of getting the site up and funded the film in 2014 and again in 2015.
The site and films help people see what direct seeding is all about and identify important business contacts for advice about how to proceed, especially for people new to the activity - all from the comfort of home if desired.
In 2015 we revisited the site and filmed how the belt was progressing. It is growing well and the tops of the belt is visible from both the Great Ocean Road and the Warrnambool Cobden Road.
