Conservation Volunteers Australia and Greencorp lend a hand to the Friends of Taylor Park.

Michael Darcy brought his team of trusty volunteers from Conservation
Volunteers Australia (CVA) to help Friends of Taylor Park make a start
on a gross weed problem.  The focus of the day was manually digging out
two major weeds: Agapanthus and Watsonia.  So it was heavy work and the
group of CVA volunteers laboured all day.  This batch of volunteers was
mature aged and their work was thorough. Thanks go to: Greg Renshaw, Bill Brennan, Thomas Hill, William Watson, John Issell, Anthony Morf, Eugene Rylance, Graeme Spowart, Rani Murphy. This
heavy work was
continued by a clan of Greencorp workers, ably led by brothers Andrew
and Stuart Quick, the latter a long standing member of Landcare.  The group,
consisting of: Chris Lockley, Carl Reid, Indiana
Duffey, Alan Anderson, Jadyn Leweis, Bronwyn
Reynolds and Jason Hart continued the work begun by CVA and for two more days dug out
lush
Agapanthus weeds, with the decision having been made not to dig the
Watsonis but to spray it with ‘Brush Off’ in early Spring.  This young
group of workers let it be known that they appreciated the natural
beauty of Taylor Park; 'It's not every day you get to work in paradise', said Alan, a cheerful Greencorp member, flashing his colourful new mowhawk hairdo.  The Greencorp workers also
understood that they were ‘the big guns’
brought in to assist their elders and Friends, in the management of a
severe weed problem.  They understood that this was a weed problem that had got beyond the Friends' capacity to handle.
And it's thanks to an observant member of Torquay Landcare that the 'big guns' had been called in to help.
The Great Ocean Road Coast Committee (GORCC) did their bit too and soon removed the mountains of weeds.
The three Friends of Taylor Park were all present
on each occasion at some time during the day, gloves and digging forks
to the fore.  Eion & Betty Beaton and Erina Batt are keen
volunteers, and turn up on the second Saturday of every month to weed
or plant and generally give some care to the park.
Given the
very visible work of the team of eight CVA and a member from Torquay
Landcare, on April 13, and two days on May 10-11 from Greencorp,
passers-by often paused to enquire about the evident hard work.  As a
result, a few more volunteers will bolster the numbers of the Friends
of Taylor Park.
If anyone else cares to lend a hand on
Saturday mornings, second Saturday of each month at 10-12, please ring Eion
Beaton 5261 5290, or simply roll up to the meeting point, which is the
table in the park,  behind the Bowling Club.
