The Southern Otway Landcare Network (SOLN) has been lucky enough to obtain 3 colonies of the winter active dung beetle Bubus Bison. Each colony is worth over $700 and contains over 1000 individuals. These colonies will be given to three lucky participants at our Field Day on Tuesday 19th July 2011 at the Hordern Vale Hall.
SOLN would like to acknowledge the Australian Government’s Caring for our Country program and the internationally renowned dung beetle expert John Feehan of Soil Care And Management who is unfortunately not able to make it to the Field Day.
The day kicks off with tea and coffee at 9:45am and then we hear from Graeme Hand of the Stipa Native Grass Association about the results of pasture management trials that have been underway across the Southern Otway’s since 2009. These studies were are aimed at trialing a pasture management technique that may reduce the need for chemical inputs yet maintain, or even improve, soil and plant health. In turn this would provide cost benefit to the landholder through reduced management costs yet continue to maintain or improve the nutritional requirements of the livestock. After lunch we take a tour of one of the trial sites. A bus will be on site to provide transport and morning tea and lunch provided.
You will also have the opportunity to see the mobile spray unit owned by the Hordern Vale – Glenaire Landcare Group which is available for hire to members of Landcare. This unit was proudly supported by the Colac Otway Shire, Norman Wettenhall Foundation and the Southern Otway Landcare Network.
