A talk about using fire as a tool
Landcaring in Christmas Hills
The first in the program of Christmas Hills Landcare activities for 2006 is:
“Understanding Fire as a Property Management Tool”
A talk by
Dr. Robyn Adams,
Senior Lecturer in Ecology,
School of Ecology and Environment, Deakin University,
(and Christmas Hills resident)
combined with a group meeting at Pip and Doug’s place
40 Dean Road
from 2pm - 5pm on Sunday, 19th March, 2006
Landowners often wish to explore whether fire can assist them in managing the vegetation on their property, and the following questions are commonly asked:
- Will burning off promote regeneration of native species?
- Can I use fire to help control weeds?
- How do I go about organising a burn?
- What are the alternatives to using fire to manage vegetation?
Robyn’s talk will cover:
- fire and regeneration ecology of local Christmas Hills vegetation
- weeds – what fire can and can’t do for you
- understanding likely outcomes of burning on your property
- setting objectives for your burn
- issues to consider before and after burning
- planning the burn (size, season, control issues etc.)
- property management plans which integrate all property management activities
