The 2023-24 Victorian Landcare Awards that opened on 18 October 2023 include five Victoria only awards categories and nine State and Territory (national) awards categories.

Victorian Landcare Awards

The Victorian Landcare Awards are held every two years to celebrate and recognise the outstanding work done by our Landcarers and environmental volunteers in award categories that acknowledge the excellence of individuals, groups, networks, First Nations people, schools and other organisations in caring for Victoria’s land, water and biodiversity.

Main Dates 

The main dates of the 2023-24 Victorian Landcare Awards are: 

Nominations opened: Wednesday 18 October 2023

Nominations close: Friday 1 March 2024

Awards ceremony (Government House, Melbourne): TBC June 2024

Victoria Only Landcare Awards Categories

The five Victoria only Landcare Awards categories are:

  • Joan Kirner Landcare Award
  • Victorian Farmers Federation/Landcare Victoria Inc. Heather Mitchell Memorial Fellowship
  • Dr. Sidney Plowman Travel and Study Award
  • Landcare and Environmental Volunteer Group Award
  • Landcare and Environmental Volunteer Network Award

Nominations are open to individual community Landcarers from Victoria who have made an outstanding contribution to Landcare for at least 10 years.

Heather Mitchell Memorial Fellowship

$4,000

Nominations are open to individual community Landcarers from Victoria.

Dr. Sidney Plowman Travel and Study Award

$4,000

 

Nominations are open to Victorian:

  • Landcare facilitators, coordinators, project officers, and project managers,
  • Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) staff,
  • Agriculture Victoria staff,
  • Catchment Management Authority staff,
  • Melbourne Water staff.

Landcare and Environmental Volunteer Group Award

 

$500

Nominations are open to Victorian Landcare and environmental volunteer groups only. This includes Landcare or catchment groups, Friends of groups, and Committees of Management that are caring for landscapes.

Landcare and Environmental Volunteer Network Award

 

$500

Nominations are open to Victorian Landcare and environmental volunteer networks who are caring for landscapes, which includes Conservation Management Networks. A network can be defined as two or more Landcare and environmental volunteer groups that operate either as a formalised network or as an informal consortium of groups that are working together, to care for landscapes for improvement of the natural environment.

Note - the winners of the Victoria only Landcare Awards categories won’t go onto the 2024 National Landcare Awards.

State & Territory Landcare Awards (national) Categories

The nine State and Territory Landcare Awards (national) categories are:

  • Climate Innovation Award 
  • Coastcare Award 
  • Community Partnerships Landcare Award
  • First Nations Landcare Collaboration Award
  • Individual Landcarer Award
  • Junior Landcare Award
  • NextGen Landcare Award
  • Sustainable Agriculture Landcare Award
  • Women in Landcare Award

Australian Government Climate Innovation Award

Nominations are open to individuals, groups, or organisations. This includes farmers, landholders, land managers, Landcare facilitators or coordinators, Traditional Owners or First Nations organisations, teachers, or a volunteer from or member of a Landcare group/network or any other environmental community care group.

Australian Government Community Partnerships Landcare Award

 

$500

 

Nominations are open to groups, networks, First Nations organisations, natural resource management organisations, research organisations, local government, farmers, landowners, land managers, schools, youth groups and environmental community groups.  

Australian Government Individual Landcarer Award

 

$500

 

Nominations are open to an individual who may be a farmer, landholder, land manager, Landcare facilitator or coordinator, Traditional Owner, Indigenous Ranger, teacher, or a volunteer from or member of a Landcare group/network or any other environmental care group.

Australian Government Sustainable Agriculture Landcare Award

 

$500

 

Nominations are open to farmers, First Nations organisations, Landcare groups/networks, farming systems groups, primary producers and/or farming enterprises.

Coastcare Award

 

$500

 

Nominations are open to a community group or network, including Coastcare and Landcare groups/networks, Dunecare, Rivercare, Bushcare, ‘Friends of’ groups, youth groups, First Nations organisations and other community groups responding to local coastal and marine environmental issues.

First Nations Landcare Collaboration Award

 

$500

 

Nominations for this award category must include BOTH the Indigenous and non-Indigenous individuals and/or community groups who are working in partnership together.

Junior Landcare Award

$500

 

Nominations are open to young people aged 18 or under, eligible groups include primary schools, secondary schools, Scouts, Girl Guides, youth organisations or young community landcare teams.

NextGen Landcare Award

 

$500

Nominations are open to an individual or youth group between the ages of 18 - 35 years who can demonstrate their capacity to lead and encourage the wider community to engage and participate in managing the environment and natural resources in their local area.

Women in Landcare Award 

 

$500

An individual woman aged 18 or over who is an Australian resident.

 

Note - the state winners of the nine national Landcare Awards categories will become finalists in these categories at the 2024 National Landcare Awards that will be held in late 2024.

Key Information  

Landcare Awards coordination: the 2023-24 State and Territory Landcare Awards are coordinated nationally by Landcare Australia, with each state and territory coordinating their own Landcare awards judging process and awards ceremony. Victorian Landcare Program staff from the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) are coordinating the 2023-24 Victorian Landcare Awards, including the promotion of nominations, and organising the judging and the Landcare awards ceremony.
